It was struggle and her head swam the moment she was sitting up, but she felt more in control now. Control was something that Katniss desperately clung to since it seemed everyone was fighting to take it away. Everyone except Gale. She gave him an appreciative smile, holding in the wince. “Well tell them if they say no, I’ll just steal a hovercraft myself,” she said with the hint of a smirk at her lame joke.

She took a moment to look over him. There were circles under his eyes and he seemed years older than when she last saw him. It was clear that what had happened weighed down heavily on him. “Are you alright?” The words were quiet as they left her. It was a question she had never asked him before. She never needed to. I truth, she wondered if anyone had ever asked him if he was alright. He was the strongest person she knew and no matter what injury he had, it never seemed to really affect him. This was different.

“You would.”

He cracked a smile at her and shook his head. Funny enough, he could even picture the scenario of her stealing a hoverplane herself, as it was just the type of thing she would do. Judging by the cheesy smirk on her face, she’d meant it as a joke, but it didn’t seem too far out of her line of habit.

When she asked him if he was okay, however, his smile shrunk a little. Was he, really? Truth be told, asking himself that question, he knew he should answer yes. The reason he looked so worn, so exhausted, was mainly because he’d been worried sick about his family, Katniss’ family, but most of all, Katniss herself. Life in District 13 wasn’t all that great, but they were safe here. Katniss was safe. And she looked to be on the healing path. So all and all, things were looking up for them.

“Yeah. Just haven’t slept awfully well. Nothing that can’t be remedied, right?”

The muscles around his jaw tightened. What happened in District 12 couldn’t be remedied, nor reversed. He knew it would keep him up in nights to come, when his younger siblings would lie awake, or even deep asleep and wallowing in their nightmares. It’d had a big impact on everyone, but the most important thing was that they were safe now. At least a huge part of his worries were gone or pushed to the background.

“You rest some. I’m not taking you out if there’s the risk of you hurting yourself ‘cause you’re not properly healed.”

Katniss rolled her eyes at the mention of rest. “I feel like I’ve rested enough.” Though the words came out clear, the rest of her body protested that statement. Her vision blurred slightly as the blood left her head. Her concussion was going to be an extreme nuisance, she decided. Giving in, she slowly laid back down and sighed. “Just tell them, ok?” She knew she wouldn’t truly rest easy until she was able to give her home a proper good bye.

Her eye widened slightly as another thought occurred to her. “Is Haymitch here?”

Gale couldn’t help but roll his eyes at her stubborness. Not because of the fact that she wanted to go down to District 12 by herself; he could understand that. In fact, he was rather grateful for not having to be down there again with the damage still so fresh the smoke hadn’t even fully cleared just yet, though he’d gladly have supported her if she’d wished for him to do so. But watching her struggle to sit up despite her body telling her she should really stay in bed for a little while longer brought a smile to his face. Her habit of pushing her boundaries had its bad sides, but who was he to rein her in? She didn’t need someone to weigh her down. She needed someone to give her the nudge she needed to get where she wanted to be.

And so he slipped his arm under her shoulder and helped her sit up, supporting her until he was sure she could sit up by herself. His fingers danced idly across the bed sheets until they found her hands again and laced with hers.

“I know you don’t like hearing this, but you really need to rest a little more. I could ask for permission to visit Twelve? Not sure if they’ll listen to me, but it’s worth a shot.”

Gale raised his eyebrows at Katniss’ remark about her pregnancy, which implied that she hadn’t been aware of the fact that she was ‘pregnant’ when Peeta had outed her as such. It gave him a mixture of feelings; on one hand, it angered him that these people seemed to be manipulating Katniss from all corners, on the other hand, it had been to protect her. At least the boy had protected her, whereas Gale was left empty-handed on that matter. Though now that she was back, he was hellbent to keep her alive. Not safe, since he knew all too well she had a knack for going after danger, but alive. If she’d somehow tumble back into the dangerzone, he’d be there with her this time. Their families were safe in District 13, and that gave him a lot more time to look after the Girl On Fire.

He watched her rant for a long moment, then unwind until she was calm again, enjoying the silence between them. Silence had never been uncomfortable for them, since they were so much alike at times that they didn’t need to speak. He could usually guess what she was thinking…except he had not seen her request coming. He grimaced at her remark, but nodded. She hadn’t been there to see it. Of course she’d need it for closure…but it was not going to be easy.

“There’s not much left to see, everything’s just…gone. But I’ll come with you, if you want.”

Once again, her best friend was brutally honest and Katniss found herself both grateful for it and resenting it. He was saying that everything she had feared had come to pass. Still, she couldn’t move on until she saw it for herself. She had to take in the full scope of what her actions caused before she could attempt to redeem it. If such a thing was even possible. Nodding to him, she was grateful for his offer, but she knew she couldn’t do that to him. Though no one else probably would, Katniss could see the pain in Gale’s eyes when he spoke of what happened. The last thing she would do to him was make him see it again and relive every step. Not when the pain is this fresh.

She covered his hand with her’s again, giving it a reassuring squeeze. What she was reassuring him of, she wasn’t sure, but it just seemed like the thing to do. “No. I think this is something I should do myself.” Her voice was steady and clear, proving that this is what she truly believed. Katniss may not be the strongest girl, but she was in no way a damsel who needed to be babied. “You can come in the hovercraft if you want, but I’ll go down alone.” She wasn’t sure if the Capitol still had their eye on her home, but at the moment, she didn’t care. “I just want to get out of this bed,” she added in frustration, attempting to sit up straight again.
